While Germany’s bustling cities like Berlin, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt often steal the spotlight, there’s a lesser-known treasure waiting to be explored. Nestled in the Harz Mountains, Wernigerode is a quaint German town that holds a special place in my heart, ever since my childhood visits near my father’s hometown of Bleicherode. This picturesque German town, with its small population of about 35,000 people this place remains untouched by the hustle and bustle of mass tourism.
Wernigerode offers a serene escape, where the charm of old-world Germany is preserved in its cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. This German town is a place where you can immerse yourself in the culture and history of the region. Whether you’re a returning visitor or discovering it for the first time, Wernigerode’s enchanting allure is undeniable. Join me in uncovering the magic of this hidden gem, a destination worth revisiting time and time again.
Wernigerode captivated me not only with its quaint charm but also with its intriguing connection to the mystical legends of witches in the Harz Mountains. As you stroll through this picturesque town, you’ll notice an array of stalls showcasing enchanting witch dolls, each a small tribute to the area’s rich folklore. This aspect of Wernigerode holds a special place in my heart, as this has fascinated me since my childhood.
Wernigerode’s town history was subject to the witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries. During this disorderly period, similar to other parts of Europe, many women in the Harz region, especially those skilled with knowledge in herbs, often widows, were unfairly accused of witchcraft and faced tragic fates. These historical events give the German town an added depth of character and mystery.
The Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, plays a central role in these legends. It is said that on Walpurgis Night, the eve of May 1st, witches would gather at the summit to meet with the devil and perform their magical rites. This is not just a fascinating tale it’s a narrative that deeply influenced my own curiosity and love for this German town.
My personal connection to these legends has been deepened by the witch dolls my father gifted me over the years, each a small but meaningful reminder of Wernigerode’s mystical past. These dolls are not just souvenirs, they are symbols of the town’s unique history and the enchanting stories that have been passed down through generations.

One crucial tip for driving on the Autobahn, if you prefer a leisurely pace, make sure to stay on the right lane. The left lanes are typically for faster traffic and keeping to the right when driving slower is both a matter of safety and courtesy.

Affordable Travel in Quaint Towns: A Guide to Smart Spending
Travelling through charming small towns often leads to lovely discoveries, particularly around affordability. Compared to bustling cities, these quaint towns offer significantly lower prices on essentials and luxuries alike. In Wernigerode, for instance, a cute café offers a buffet breakfast for around 18 euros, and there’s even a spot where you can indulge in all-you-can-eat ribs and potato salad for about 15 euros on select days. Stay tuned for more on these culinary gems in the food section of this blog post.
Navigating Currency and Payments in Wernigerode
Germany operates on the euro, and using bank cards at ATMs here is secure. Nonetheless, I always carry a bit of cash for small expenses like public transport and purchases from street vendors. My strategy is to withdraw only what I need for the day, safeguarding any extra cash in the hotel safe, if available. In the absence of a safe, I securely store my passport and cash in my suitcase. Although most places accept bank cards, I prefer using cash when on a strict daily budget to better monitor my spending. I’ve found that relying on a card makes it too easy to overshoot my budget.
A Tip for Safe Card Use: Avoiding Skimmers
An important habit I’ve adopted during my travels, especially in larger cities, is checking for card skimmers at ATMs. A simple precautionary measure is to gently feel around the card entry slot, checking for any unusual attachments. This quick check can safeguard against potential fraud.
